In Palermo, an American expat that befriended us at a small bar suggested that we visit Mondello because of our interest in architecture. He told us we’d find a great collection of Liberty style villas in a town apparently nicknamed the “South Beach of Sicily.” In fact, Liberty and Art Nouveau were precursors to the architecture that attracts so many tourists to Miami Beach, Florida. Imagine some of the most beautiful South Beach hotels, sans neon. We spent the afternoon walking along the beach and through the neighborhood, trying to decide which house we would buy as our future vacation home.
